Rare circa 1860 "Wide Awake" style kepi Lincoln supporters

Rare circa 1860 "Wide Awake" style kepi

This kepi is a "Wide Awake" style Lincoln supporter political club oilcloth hat circa 1860. The Wide Awakes were a para military-political club loosely affiliated with the "Know-Nothing Movement" in the 1850s. By 1860, the Wide Awakes backed the new Republican Party and its candidate, Abraham Lincoln. There were hundreds of chapters of the club throughout the nation and they were considered a quasi-military organization with officers, uniforms, torches, banners, and some drill expertise. They functioned as a political police force, escorting campaign speakers and maintaining order at large political gatherings. They assembled at the polls to protect voters and marched in parades in support of their party. On October 3, 1860, 10,000 Wide Awakes marched in Chicago in a procession three miles long. Harpers Weekly illustrated the event in the October 13, 1860 issue of the magazine.

The kepi is constructed of oilcloth (enamel paint on fabric) with a cardboard brim. It is adorned on the front with a stamped brass metal eagle insignia (circa 1828 style well known and documented as used with the Wike Awake movement) and plain brass side buttons. This is an uncommon piece of headgear very specific to the American Civil War which is in attic-untouched condition overall.

For Sale $4,500 Louis 1.401.249.0492

The image of a young "Wide Awake" was found on the internet and is NOT included in this lot.

Choose work you enjoy

"Life is a great university for the unfolding of the mind, for developing character. In choosing our life work, when we are free to choose, we should remember this, and choose that which will call the biggest man or woman out of us and not that from which we can coin the most dollars."

Orison Swett Marden

How to learn about collectible coins stress free

Discipline never seems enjoyable at first but after practicing for a long time it produces an abundant harvest. Even though coin collecting is a hobby like anything else in order to become knowledgeable about the hobby without a lot of stress you need to spend time learning creatively. How you spend your time learning determines how much enjoyment received from it.

Stress-free ways to learn.

1. Coin collecting is a family-oriented hobby. It's especially interesting and enjoyable to explore the historic events related to the date and information minted onto the coin. Some parents do research about the dates on coins and the history related to the date in which they were minted and share the information with their children. Ideas: rent a costume and dress up like George Washington or go to a museum such as the Nathaniel Green Homestead in Coventry, RI, the admission is $8 and goes to preserve the property.

2. Join or start a coin club. Coin clubs are good ways to find like-minded individuals looking to share their knowledge and expertise. Many coin clubs provide for social interaction in a safe place. Sometimes members buy and sell coins at clubs.

3. Join a Facebook Group on the topic of coins. These groups are an excellent way to find information pertaining to coins. Feel free to post an image of a coin you might have found in circulation or had in your collection for a number of years. The Admins of these groups are very helpful.

4. Close friends with a similar interest. Friends who share the same hobby have a unique type of social interaction in that not only do they enjoy conversation together, their similar interests fosters a spirit of a labor of love in terms of learning. Two or more friends bounce information off of each other develops the field of knowledge among friends.

5. Numismatic Books and book clubs. Numismatic books are good reference guides for the coin collector. But what if you formed a book club related to numismatic books. I understand many people like to maintain privacy regarding their hobby of coin collecting. However, the growing number of coin forums allows for privacy and discussion even about topics such as numismatic books. I would like to see the idea of numismatic book clubs take off in the coin forum arenas.

6. Join Coin Collector Forums. The American Numismatic Association, the largest coin club has a forum. Coin Community Family is another good one. These forums are only helpful if you participate it requires more than creating a user name and password to learn.

7. Watch Youtube videos on the topic. Youtube videos are an excellent way to broaden your knowledge about collectible coins. Especially when you can watch Youtube on your television while relaxing on your recliner.

Whatever way you decide to broaden your numismatic knowledge make it into a fun-spirited memorable event.

If you are looking for an outlet from a stressful environment feel free to escape into the realm of practicing these collecting learning techniques.

Passing on the tradition of coin collecting

" Photo Credit: Courtesy and used with permission PCGS, Professional Coin Grading Service and www.PCGSCoinfacts.com 1893 Isabella Quarter MS 68+"

You've had your coin collection for a long time quite possibly for decades. Some older folk try to pass on the tradition of collecting coins to their families only to discover their interests differ from them. Some younger folk like fast cars or motorcycles whiles others are interested in computers, gaming, cell phones, and tablets. It isn't to difficult to see the influence computers and the Internet have had on younger generations.

Take for example coin collecting what a wonderful hobby to have as a youngster or adult. Some collect coins for their artistic characteristics. There is nothing like looking at a Gem Brilliant Uncirculated coin under a magnifying glass. Others collect coins with the hope of appreciation in value over time.

Intuitively, when Pope John Paul II looked under a magnifying glass at the description of the miracle in a book which was performed through the life of Saint Padre Pio during his Canonization. Now looking at coins with that magnifying glass any coin collector would consider that cool.

You really need to have enthusiasm for this hobby to be able to pass it on to others. One way would be to share history to your family by collecting Commemorative coins. Commemorative coins have come down in value from their high in the early '80s. Now is a good time to buy some of these rich in history coins. Another way to share history is to define the meanings of Liberty, In God We Trust and E Pluribus Unum to a family member which is on most old and modern coins alike.

Sharing your passion for this hobby provides an experience unlike many. This hobby is both a passive and an active hobby. You make of it what you desire and sharing creates feelings of satisfaction as well.

Start by passing this tradition onto someone looking to pass time or become active in a hobby known as the King of hobbies.
